Robert Sean Wilentz is the Sidney and Ruth Lapidus Professor of History at Princeton University, where he has taught since 1979. ==Background== Wilentz was born on February 20, 1951 in New York City, where his father, Eli Wilentz, 〔Thomas, Robert McG., Jr., ("Eli Wilentz, Whose Bookstore Lured the 'Beats', Is Dead at 76" ), ''The New York Times'', June 26, 1995.〕 and uncle Theodore "Ted" Wilentz,〔Martin, Douglas, ("Theodore Wilentz, 86, Dies; A Bookman Extraordinaire" ), ''The New York Times'', May 6, 2001.〕 owned a well-known Greenwich Village bookstore, the Eighth Street Bookshop.〔Reed, Bill, ("Positively Eighth Street" ), ''Reality Studio''〕 Wilentz earned one B.A. at Columbia University in 1972, before earning another at Oxford University (Balliol College) in 1974 on a Kellett Fellowship. In 1975 he earned an M.A. at Yale University and in 1980 he received his Ph.D. also from Yale, under the supervision of David Brion Davis.
